The temptation called ‘laptop’
Everyone seems to have one. Children get them for their birthdays (at least, quite a lot teenagers seem to these days), fellow students get them from their parents or pay them from their jobs. Laptops are popular. Wireless networking is popular and the people with (or those who are planning to buy) a laptop can’t seem to stop talking about the advantages of a laptop over a regular pc. And to be honest… buying one is sooo tempting…
But I need to be talked out of it. I bought a laptop about a year ago (and sold it not very long after); a celeron 1GHz with 384MB of RAM. It sucked. It was much slower than my Duron-650 at that time, it was noisy, it got too hot too soon… and I had no actual use for it. Of course this may be because I bought it in the summer vacation, not having to work at the university. But even during college semesters, I think it’d be no use. Yeah, of course it’s kinda cool to be able to code, browse, chat, etc. anywhere at the university and even at other people’s homes, but… why on earth would I want to do that?
Theoretically I could afford to buy a simple laptop (would be a Celeron or something like that 8-) ) and a friend of mine (on the hunt for the same thing) found a real bargain at Media Markt in Oldenburg. It’s tempting… but there’s Linux boxes at the university, I’ve got a nice 17″ TFT at home and on top of that one might think of better things to do than carrying around a computer all the time. I must resist this, people, please bear with me and find me reminders of why I shouldn’t want to buy one of these cursed things…
Maybe you should try a PowerBook for a change?
Erh, when VAT is deductable, I get a 50% reduction because of being a student and the government adds some financial support to promote Apple products I may try one of those. Or I could try buying a lottery ticket… or find someplace where I can win one. Crime would be an option too, but I think the risk of getting a criminal record is not worth it, not to mention that that would tear up my conscience…
Get a Powerbook and never look back. Works great with all the unix terminals at our uni.
And if money is a problem, well insert step 0: get a job. ;-)
Hmm, did you guys actually read what I wrote? I greatly doubt the use of a
laptopnotebook. How does one from Apple differ from x86 laptops in usability? I mean, when I wonder what on earth to do with a laptop anyways, what difference does it make what’s inside? Sure, prettier looks, faster… but even then, why bother :P ?
